MINUTES OF PROCEEDING

(Meeting No. 12)

Tuesday, February 3, 1998

 

The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:00 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 209, West Block, the Chair, Beth Phinney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Elinor Caplan, Aileen Carroll, Claude Drouin, Maurice Dumas, Reed Elley, Grant Hill, Lynn Myers, Beth Phinney, Pauline Picard, Jospeh Volpe, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: John Cummins for Maurice Vellacott.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore, Nancy Miller-Chenier and Gérald Lafrenière, Research Officers. From Committees and Legislative Services: Monique Pronovost, Administrative Assistant.

The Committee proceeded to discuss its future business, in camera.

It was agreed, - That the Committee adopt the proposed agenda for the month of February.

It was agreed, - That the Committee apply to the Budget Sub-Committee for a supplementary budget of $77,040.00 for its natural health products study.

At 9:15 o’clock a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

Witnesses: From the Advisory Panel on Natural Health Products: Dr. Frank Chandler, Chair; André Gagnon, Member, National Association of Health Products; Dr. J. William LaValley, Founding President, Canadian Complementary Medical Association; Dr. Mary X. Wu, Director, Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine. From the Canadian Health Food Association: Serge Lavoie, Executive Director; Michelle Marcotte, Intersect Alliance. From the Canadian Coalition for Health Freedom: Mike Vertolli, President; Valerie Dugale, Secretary; Joel Thuna, Member; Maureen Horne-Paul, Member.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of natural health products. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Thursday, November 20, 1997.)

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:30 o’clock a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:35 o’clock a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 12:03 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
