The Standing Committee on Health met at 4:17 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 308 West Block, the Chair, Beth Phinney, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Elinor Caplan, Claude Drouin, Maurice Dumas, Grant Hill, Dan McTeague, Lynn Myers, Beth Phinney, Pauline Picard, Greg Thompson, Rose-Marie Ur, Maurice Vellacott, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.
Acting Members present: David Pratt for Aileen Carroll, Paul Szabo for Joseph Volpe, Ted White for Reed Elley.
Other Members present: Réal Ménard.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore and Nancy Miller-Chenier, Research Officers.
Appearing: The Hon. Allan Rock, P.C., M.P., Minister of Health.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31st, 1997.
The Hon. Allan Rock made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 5:47 o'clock p.m., it was agreed, - That the Committee proceed to the consideration of other business.
Judy Wasylycia-Leis moved, - That the Committee report to the House of Commons its recommendation that the Minister of International Trade and his MAI negotiators seek to replace the current insufficient draft reservation for health and social services with a complete exception for government sponsored health and social services.
By a show of hands, the motion was negatived:
YEAS: 4 NAYS: 6
It was agreed, - That the Committee apply to the Budget Sub-Committee for a budget of $114,733.00 to travel in February 1998 during the Committee's consideration of natural health product.
At 5:50 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
