Meeting No. 75

Thursday, May 6, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, John Cummins, Claude Drouin, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gar Knutson, Gary Lunn, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Carmen Provenzano, Yves Rocheleau, Lou Sekora, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada: The Hon. David Anderson, Minister, Fisheries and Oceans.

Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Carol Beal, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services; William J.S. Elliott, Deputy Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard; John Davis, Assistant Deputy Minister, Science; Wayne Wouters, Deputy Minister; David Bevan, Director General, Conservation and Protection.

Order of Reference from the House of Commons dated Monday, March 1st, 1999: Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000 - under Fisheries and Oceans.

The Chair called Vote 1 under FISHERIES AND OCEANS.

The Minister made a statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

By unanimous consent, Votes 1, 5 and 10 were carried on division.

By unanimous consent, the Chair was authorised to report the Estimates to the House.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, - That Fisheries Resource Conservation Council be invited to appear on Tuesday, May 11, 1999 to discuss the issues on sealing.

At 10:50 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
