Thursday, December 4, 1997

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:35 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 253-D, Centre Block, in a Televised Videoteleconference, the Chair, George Baker, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: George Baker, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Sophia Leung, Lawrence O'Brien, Carmen Provenzano, Paul Steckle, Gary Lunn, Yvan Bernier, Peter Stoffer and Bill Matthews.

Acting Members present: Howard Hilstrom for Reed Elley.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery and Alan Nixon, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the University of Dalhousie: Dr. Jeffrey A. Hutchings, Professor of Fish Biology. Videoteleconference from Vancouver, B.C.: From University of British Columbia: Dr. Carl J. Walters, Professor of Fisheries and Zoology. From the Memorial University: Dr. Richard Haedrich, Professor of Biology.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a review of the role of sciences in fisheries management.

Dr. Jeffrey Hutchings, Dr. Carl J. Walters and Dr. Richard Haedrich made an opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:06 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
