Pursuant to Standing Orders 68(2) and 69(1), on motion of Mr. Ritz (Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food), seconded by Mr. Solberg (Minister of Human Resources and Social Development), Bill C-39, An Act to amend the Canada Grain Act, chapter 22 of the Statutes of Canada, 1998 and chapter 25 of the Statutes of Canada, 2004, was introduced, read the first time, ordered to be printed and ordered for a second reading at the next sitting of the House.

Motions

Pursuant to Standing Order 56.1(1), Mr. Van Loan (Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform), seconded by Mr. Blackburn (Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec), moved, — That, notwithstanding any standing order or usual practices of the House, the notice requirement to call Bill C-18, An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act (verification of residence), for debate today shall be waived; when the House adjourns today, and provided that Bill C-18 and Bill S-2, An Act to amend the Canada-United States Tax Convention Act, 1984, have been read a third time and passed, it shall stand adjourned until Monday, January 28, 2008, provided that, for the purposes of Standing Order 28, it shall be deemed to have sat on Thursday, December 13 and Friday, December 14, 2007; and if Bill C-18 and Bill S-2 are not completed before the end of Government Orders, the House shall sit beyond the ordinary hour of daily adjournment for that purpose and shall not be adjourned except pursuant to a motion proposed by a Minister of the Crown.

By unanimous consent, it was ordered, — That, in relation to its study on Veterans Health Care Review and Veterans Independence Program, 12 members of the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs be authorized to travel to Québec, Quebec, and Petawawa, Ontario, and six members of the Committee be authorized to travel to Comox, British Columbia, Cold Lake, Alberta, Shearwater, Nova Scotia, and Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, in January and February of 2008, and that the necessary staff do accompany the Committee members.


By unanimous consent, it was ordered, — That, in relation to its study of Canada's involvement in Afghanistan, 12 members of the Standing Committee on National Defence be authorized to travel to Kandahar and Kabul, Afghanistan, and Brussels, Belgium, in the winter of 2008, and that the necessary staff do accompany the Committee members.
