The Clerk of the Committee: Your first item of business is to elect a chair. I'm ready to receive motions to that effect.

[Translation]

Mr. Eugène Bellemare (Ottawa—Orléans, Lib.): I would like to nominate Ms. Judi Longfield as chair of the committee.

The Clerk: Mr. Bellemare nominates Ms. Judi Longfield as chair of the committee.

Are there any other motions?

[English]

Yes, Mr. Spencer.

Mr. Larry Spencer (Regina—Lumsden—Lake Centre, Canadian Alliance): Can I file a notice of motion?

The Clerk: I don't have any authority to do anything but elect the chair.

Mr. Larry Spencer: Okay. Sorry.

The Clerk: As soon as we have our chair, perhaps you can do that under other business.

Mr. Larry Spencer: Right.

The Clerk: Mr. Bellemare moves that Mrs. Longfield do take the chair of the committee. All those in favour.

(Motion agreed to)

The Clerk: I declare the motion carried and Mrs. Longfield duly elected chair of the committee. I invite her to take the chair.

The Chair (Mrs. Judi Longfield (Whitby—Ajax, Lib.)): Thank you very much.

I appreciate the confidence you have shown. I think we'll have an interesting year.

My first duty as your new chair would be to call for motions for vice-chairs.

Murray.

Mr. Murray Calder (Dufferin—Peel—Wellington—Grey, Lib.): Thank you, Madam Chair.

I would like to make a motion to nominate Diane St. Jacques as the vice-chair from the government side.

The Chair: Are there any other motions?

Mr. Larry Spencer: I would like to nominate Joe Peschisolido as vice-chair from the opposition.

The Chair: Are there any further nominations?

On the first motion.

(Motion agreed to)

The Chair: On the second motion.

(Motion agreed to)

The Chair: Welcome.

Mr. Spencer, you had something under other business?

Mr. Larry Spencer: No, that was it.

The Chair: Mr. Crête.

[Translation]

Mr. Paul Crête (Kamouraska—Rivière-du- Loup—Témiscouata—Les Basques, BQ): Madam Chair, may I congratulate you on your election.

[English]

The Chair: Thank you.

[Translation]

Mr. Paul Crête: I would like the committee to take into consideration, in its work, the content of the letter I addressed to Mr. Adams a few days ago, on September 26. At that time, he was—

The Chair: That's fine.

Mr. Paul Crête: In that letter, I asked that the members of the committee be convened as soon as possible to discuss the social impact of the economic downturn and the actions to be taken. I would like the steering committee to be made aware of this, and I would like it to take this into consideration in deciding future business. In the short term I would like the committee to examine the social impacts of the crisis caused by international terrorism and the multiple lay-offs it has triggered, as well as the other impacts this will have on everything having to do with the social aspect of our lives. I would hope that the steering committee will consider this a priority for the future business of the committee.

[English]

The Chair: Monsieur Crête, I thank you for the proposal. I think it is something the steering committee should study. I would suggest, with the agreement of committee members, we have a steering committee on Thursday morning this week. Would that meet with your approval?

Some hon. members: Agreed.

The Chair: Is there any further business? Seeing none, this meeting is adjourned.
