Meeting No. 5

Wednesday, October 22, 1997

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 3:47 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 371, West Block, the Chair, Charles Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Charles Caccia, Chuck Cadman, Aileen Carroll, Rick Casson, Yvon Charbonneau, John Herron, Joe Jordan, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, David Pratt.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Monique Hébert, Bill Murray, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the University of British Columbia: Kathryn Harrison, Chair, Environment Studies Program.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the harmonization initiative of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. (See Minutes of Proceedings, dated Monday, October 20, 1997, Meeting no. 2)

The witness made an opening statement and answered questions.

The Committee discussed its future business.

It was agreed, - That the Committee meet with Members of the Environment Committee of the National Peoples’ Congress of China the evenings of November 4 and 5.

It was agreed, - That the Committee recall officials of Environment Canada with regard to the harmonization study.

At 5:19 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
