The Standing Committee on Industry met in a televised session at 4:12 o'clock p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chairman, David Walker, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Morris Bodnar, Pierre Brien, Bonnie Brown, Nick Discepola, Walt Lastewka, Philip Mayfield, Réal Ménard, Ian Murray, Bernard Patry, Werner Schmidt, Joseph Volpe and David Walker.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its review of Section 14 of the Patent Act Amendment 1992 (Chapter 2, Statutes of Canada, 1993) (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Monday, February 17, 1997, Issue No. 4 -- Meeting No. 42).

David McFadden, John Kelsall, Robert Stephens, Jacques Messier, David Howard and Pierre Morin, each made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:33 o'clock p.m., the Vice-Chair, Walt Lastewka, took the Chair.

The witnesses continued answering questions.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its review of Section 14 of the Patent Act Amendment 1992 (Chapter 2, Statutes of Canada, 1993) (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Monday, February 17, 1997, Issue No. 4, Meeting No. 42).

On motion of Morris Bodnar, it was agreed,--That the Committee retain the services of David Vaver, as consultant, to assist in its consideration of Section 14 of the Patent Act Amendment 1992 (Chapter 2, Statutes of Canada, 1993), from April 8th to 30th, 1997 for an amount not to exceed $3,000.

On motion of Morris Bodnar, it was agreed,--That the Chairman be authorized to submit a supplementary budget to the Budget Sub-Committee of the Liaison Committee in the amount of $79,000.

The Committee proceeded to discuss the draft report.
