The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:37 o'clock p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Joint Chair, Albina Guarnieri, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

Representing the Senate: Gérald A. Beaudoin, Shirley Maheu, Maurice Riel, Jean-Claude Rivest and Louis J. Robichaud.

Representing the House of Commons: Cliff Breitkreuz, Albina Guarnieri, Jean-Paul Marchand, Benoît Serré and Georgette Sheridan.

Acting Member present: Dan McTeague for Michel Dupuy.

In attendance: From the Committees Directorate of the Senate: Tonu Onu, Joint Clerk of the Committee. From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From ``Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada'': Yvon Samson, Director General. From ``Association canadienne-française de l'Ontario (Ottawa-Carleton)'': Diane Desaulniers, President.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(4)(b), the Committee resumed its study on the application of the Official Languages Act in the National Capital Region (See Minutes of Proceedings and evidence, dated Tuesday, November 19, 1996, Issue 10).

Yvon Samson and Diane Desaulniers made statements and answered questions.

At 4:56 o'clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:02 o'clock p.m., by unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

The Committee discussed its future business.

At 5:06 o'clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
