The Sub-Committee on Aboriginal Education of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 10:10 o'clock a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Bldg., the Chairman, Robert Bertrand, presiding.

Members of the Sub-committee present: Claude Bachand, Robert Bertrand, Raymond Bonin, Margaret Bridgman and John Murphy.

Other Members present: Paul DeVillers and George Rideout.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jane May Allain and Jill Wherrett, Research Officers.

Witness: From Red Crow Community College: Marie Smallface Marule.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), a study of Aboriginal Education (See Minutes of Proceedings and Evidence dated December 14, 1994, Issue No. 1).

Marie Smallface Marule made an opening statement, and answered questions.

At 11:08 o'clock a.m., the Sub-Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.


THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1995

The Sub-Committee on Aboriginal Education of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 10:15 o'clock a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Bldg., the Chairman, Robert Bertrand, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Claude Bachand, Robert Bertrand, Raymond Bonin and John Murphy.

Other Member present: Len Taylor.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jane May Allain and Jill Wherrett, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Assembly of First Nations: Alfred Linklater, Director of Education; Chief Steven Point, Chiefs Representative; Dr. Vivian Ayoungman, Director of Education, Treaty 7 Tribal Council; Marjorie Gould, Acting Director of Education, Mi'Kmaq Education Authority of Nova Scotia and Dr. Rose-Alma McDonald, Consultant, Education Secretariat. From Indigenous Education Coalition: Donna Young, Director and John Peters, Service Co-ordinator.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), a study of Aboriginal Education (See Minutes of Proceedings and Evidence dated December 14, 1994, Issue No. 1).

Alfred Linklater made an opening statement and with the other witnesses, answered questions.

Donna Young and John Peters each made opening statements, and answered questions.

At 12:22 o'clock p.m., it was agreed,--That the Sub-Committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.


TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1995
(Meeting No. 20)

The Sub-Committee on Aboriginal Education of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 10:05 o'clock a.m. this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Acting Chairman, Raymond Bonin, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Claude Bachand, Raymond Bonin and Margaret Bridgman.

Acting Members present: Gordon Kirkby for John Murphy and Paul DeVillers for Robert Bertrand.

Other Member present: Len Taylor.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jane May Allain and Jill Wherrett, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Office of Education, Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations: Blaine C. Favel, Chief; Kevin Tootoosis, Director of Education.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), a study of Aboriginal Education (See Minutes of Proceedings and Evidence dated Wednesday, December 14, 1994, Issue No. 1).

Chief Blaine Favel made an opening statement and with the other witness, answered questions.

At 11:03 o'clock a.m., the Sub-Committee agreed to adjourn to the call of the Chair.


THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1995

The Sub-Committee on Aboriginal Education of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met in camera at 11:10 o'clock a.m. this day, in Room 306, West Block, Robert Bertrand, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Claude Bachand, Robert Bertrand, Raymond Bonin and John Murphy.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Sub-Committee continued its consideration of a draft report.

It was agreed,--That the Sub-Committee authorize the payment for the luncheon hosted by the Chair for Mr. Linklater who appeared before the Committee.

At 12:55 o'clock p.m., it was agreed,--That the Sub-Committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
