    The Clerk of the Committee: Honourable members, I see a quorum. In accordance with Standing Order 106(1), your first item of business is to elect a chair.

    I just want to advise you that the motion adopted by the House on October 5, 2004, reads that with regard to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts:

the Chair shall be a Member of the Official Opposition, the first Vice-Chair shall be a Member of the government party and the second Vice-Chair shall be a Member of an opposition party other than the Official Opposition.

    We shall now proceed to the election of the chair. I am ready to receive motions to that effect.

    Mr. Fitzpatrick.

    Mr. Brian Fitzpatrick (Prince Albert, CPC): I'll nominate John Williams.

    Mr. Rob Anders (Calgary West, CPC): I'll second that.

    The Clerk: Any other?

    Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?

    An hon. member: Does Mr. Williams want the job?

    Mr. John Williams (Edmonton—St. Albert, CPC): He accepts the nomination.

    Mr. Benoît Sauvageau (Repentigny, BQ): May we ask Mr. Williams if he has something to say?

    The Clerk: Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion that John Williams be elected chair of the committee?

    (Motion agreed to)

    The Clerk: We will now proceed to the election of vice-chair for the governing party. I am ready to receive motions to that effect.

    Hon. Walt Lastewka (St. Catharines, Lib.): I move that Gary Carr be elected as vice-chair.

    The Clerk: Any other nominations?

    Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?

    (Motion agreed to)

    The Clerk: We will now proceed to the election of the next vice-chair, a member of an opposition party other than the official opposition.

    Monsieur Boire.

    Mr. Alain Boire (Beauharnois—Salaberry, BQ): I would like to nominate Mr. Sauvageau.

    The Clerk: Thank you.

    Mr. Boire moves that Mr. Sauvageau be elected vice-chair of the committee.

    My congratulations to the two vice-chairs. I look forward to working with you all as public accounts continues to do its good work for the benefit of all Canadians.

    We have some future business. Therefore, I'm going to suspend the meeting for five minutes until we do the switchover from the election of office-holders to the way we can do new business.

    We are suspended.
